Steven Frossard second en Allemagne
Steven Frossard a obtenu le meilleur résultat de sa carrière avec une seconde place au Grand Prix d’Allemagne, neuvième des quinze épreuves du Championnat du Monde de Motocross. Son équipier Gregory Aranda a connu un week-end plus difficile puisqu’il se retire en seconde manche touché à la cheville, alors que Loic Rombaut a marqué des points à deux reprises.
Teustchenthal, cadre du Grand Prix d’Allemagne depuis plus d’une décennie est l’une des pistes favorites de Steven Frossard, qui avait obtenu sur ce même circuit le premier podium de sa carrière l’an passé. Et même si le circuit a été modifié en plusieurs endroits, avec l’ajout de sable dans le sol en d’autres, il n’a pas perdu son caractère en dépit des quelques averses du week-end.
Troisième de la manche qualificative, Steven prit l’un de ses meilleurs départs de l’année en première manche, se trouvant d’entrée de jeu en seconde position derrière Musquin. Contrairement aux précédents GP le leader ne parvint pas à lâcher tout le monde, et Steven s’appliqua à lui mettre de la pression jusqu’à ce que Musquin chute durant le huitième tour. A partir de là Steven n’eut plus qu’à contrôler la course, son dauphin étant suffisamment loin pour qu’il ne soit pas inquiété et signe son second succès de manche après la Bulgarie. Loic Rombaut fera de son côté une course régulière, accrochant la quinzième place à l’arrivée. Parti dans le top six de la seconde manche, Steven perdra ses chances de victoire en se bloquant dans un virage, se retrouvant coincé sous sa moto. Perdant deux places dans l’incident il reviendra ensuite au cinquième rang, décrochant la seconde place du GP derrière le jeune Len Roczen, plus jeune vainqueur de l’histoire des GP. Dix neuvième de la manche malgré plusieurs chutes, Loic termine dix neuvième et se classe dix huitième du GP.
Constamment dans le top six des séances d’essais sur samedi, Gregory Aranda se qualifiera en huitième position, sortant vainqueur de ses duels avec Mackenzie et Philippaerts dans cette course qualificative. Sixième en début de première manche il perdra trois places dans une chute lors du cinquième tour, se classant dixième derrière ses compatriotes Vuillemin et Pichon. De nouveau le mieux placé des pilotes Kawasaki en début de seconde manche, Greg se retirera après une troisième chute ayant réveillé sa blessure à la cheville.
Steven Frossard : J’ai fait une superbe première manche, j’ai pris un bon départ et je suis resté dans la roue de Marvin jusqu’à ce qu’il tombe ; j’étudiais ses trajectoires et je pensais porter une attaque dans les dix dernières minutes, mais il m’a facilité la tâche en chutant. Je n’ai eu qu’à gérer mon avance jusqu’à l’arrivée, c’était bien parti mais malheureusement je suis mal sorti de la grille au second départ ! Je suis rapidement revenu quatrième avant de me bloquer dans un virage, j’étais coincé sous la moto et j’ai perdu deux places, avant de chuter à nouveau un peu plus tard. Je termine cinquième et prends la seconde place du GP, j’espérais bien m’imposer mais c’est comme çà. Maintenant on va arriver sur des GP sablonneux, je m’y prépare en Belgique avec Thierry Godfroid et je commence à aimer rouler sur ces surfaces.
Gregory Aranda : Je suis arrivé ici en me doutant que ca allait être difficile, puisque je n’avais pu rouler qu’une fois en l’espace de deux semaines du fait d’une blessure à la cheville. Hier cela s’est plutôt bien passé, avec de bons chronos et une bonne manche qualificative. Malgré une petite chute en première manche je termine dans le top dix, mais en seconde manche je suis tombé trois fois et dans la dernière chute la cheville droite a encore pris un choc. Le point positif c’est que le nouveau moteur que j’étrennais ce week-end me permet de partir dans le top cinq, dès lors les choses sont plus faciles. Je vais rester tranquille cette semaine pour que la cheville se repose, et j’essaierais de rouler en Lettonie le week-end prochain.
Loic Rombaut : J’ai fait une bonne première manche, je termine quinzième en tenant un bon rythme durant toute la course. En seconde je suis mieux sorti de la grille, mais au premier virage Van Horebeek m’a pris la roue avant et je suis tombé. Je m’accroche ensuite avec Lupino dans ma remontée, je repars à l’attaque et je reviens dans les points avec un bon rythme en course. Je suis content car c’est la sixième manche que je termine dans les points, cette fois sur un circuit assez bizarre avec un sol très dur et des portions sablonneuses.
Jean Jacques Luisetti (Propriétaire team CLS): On est content de la performance de Steven, c’est sûr qu’après la première manche on espérait peut être une victoire de GP mais Steven est de plus en plus présent aux avant postes, et les positions au championnat se resserrent. On sait qu’on est sur la bonne voie, on va continuer à travailler pour franchir la dernière marche ! La moto évolue bien, on l’a encore vu ce week-end ou Steven est mieux parti que d’habitude ; c’est à la fois du aux évolutions techniques de la moto, et au travail que Steven fait avec Thierry Godfroid. Steven a pris des points dans les deux manches et confirme qu’il est sur la bonne voie, n’oublions pas que c’est sa première saison de GP. En MX1 Gregory a confirmé sa vitesse avec d’excellents chronos, malheureusement il ne termine pas la seconde manche avec sa blessure à la cheville. Je voudrais préciser que Steven et Gregory seront encore chez nous la saison prochaine, puisqu’ils ont un contrat pluriannuel, et qu’en fonction des budgets nous verrons si nous pouvons continuer à aligner un second pilote MX2.
Best career result for Steven Frossard
Steven Frossard scored his best ever GP result with a second position at the Grand Prix of Germany, round nine of fifteen in the 2009 Motocross World Championship. Teammate Gregory Aranda had a mixed day as he retired during the second heat with an injured ankle, while Loic Rombaut scored twice points.
Teutschenthal, home of the German Grand Prix for almost a decade, is one of Steven Frossard’s favourite tracks as he claimed his first ever GP podium at the venue last year. Even if the circuit had been modified with two new sections and more sand mixed in the soil, the layout remained similar despite mixed weather on Sunday with several short showers.
Third in the qualification Heat, Steven took one of his best starts of the season in the opening race, and arrived immediately to second position behind Musquin. The leader could not pull away as he had done during the last couple of races, and Steven applied pressure until Musquin crashed on the eighth lap. Steven controlled the last twenty minutes with a gap over his rivals to claim his second heat win of the season (the last was in Bulgaria). Loic Rombaut made a consistent race to finish fifteenth. Steven started in the top sixth of the second heat, but during the second circulation he lost time and two ranks after a mistake. He had time to recover from his error, and pushed back to fifth in the race to finish as overall runner-up behind Ken Roczen, the youngest ever GP winner. Nineteenth in the second race, Loic Rombaut took eighteenth position in the Grand Prix classification.
Consistently in the top sixth of the timed practice periods on Saturday, Gregory Aranda collected an eighth place on the starting grid, battling and finally winning his duels with Mackenzie and Philippaerts during the qualifying race. Sixth early in the first heat, he lost three places when he crashed during the fifth lap, and finished tenth behind Vuillemin and Pichon. Once more Gregory was the best placed Kawasaki rider at the start of the second moto but he retired at mid-distance after a third crash which worsened his ankle injury.
Steven Frossard: “I had a good opening race; after a decent start I came immediately to second position behind Musquin and followed him until he crashed. I was watching his lines and was waiting for the last ten minutes to attack him, but he fell and then I just had to control the gap over the rest. I knew that I could win my first GP here but unfortunately I had a bad jump from the gate. I came back to fourth but crashed and lost two places, and then crashed again. Fifth and second overall is not too bad, but I was expecting a win… The next rounds will take place on sandy tracks, I’m working hard alongside Thierry Godfroid and I can say that I am starting to enjoy riding in the sand.”
Gregory Aranda: “Before I came here I knew that it would be difficult, as I twisted my ankle two weeks ago and couldn’t train normally, just one riding session this week. In qualifying it was pretty OK, with good lap-times and an eighth position in the race. I had a small crash in the first moto today but I scored a top ten result, then in the second race I crashed three times and damaged again my ankle in the last one. I had a new engine this weekend and I took three good starts, that’s a positive point as racing is much easier when you can start in the top five. I will stay quiet this week, and will try to ride next week in Latvia.”
Loic Rombaut: “I’m satisfied with my first moto. I finished fifteenth and had a good rhythm during the race. My second start was better than the first one, but Van Horebeek took my front wheel in the first corner and I crashed. Then I collided with Lupino when I was coming back up the standings, but finally I was able to score two points with nineteenth place. The track was pretty difficult with hard sections and sandy sections but I’m happy to score points for the sixth consecutive race.”
Jean Jacques Luisetti (Owner team CLS): “We’re delighted by Steven’s performance, of course we were expecting a GP win after the first heat but Steven is becoming more and more consistent. The positions are closer in the standings and we know that we are working in the right direction and for sure we’ll continue to reach the top step. We saw this weekend that Steven got better starts than usual; the bike has been improved, with a better engine, and Steven is working hard alongside Thierry Godfroid. Loic again scored points in both heats, it’s only his first GP season and he is heading in the right direction. In the MX1 class Gregory confirmed once more his speed, unfortunately he damaged again his ankle in a crash during the second race. I’d like to add that Steven and Gregory both have a multi-year deals with us, they will ride again for team CLS next year; we’ll decide later, depending of the budget, if we can line-up a second MX2 rider.”
