Quatrième podium de la saison pour Steven Frossard
Après trois long mois d’attente, Steven Frossard est remonté sur un podium de Grand Prix de week-end au Brésil, lors de la quinzième et dernière épreuve du Championnat du Monde 2009 de Motocross.
La pluie a bien perturbé le retour d’un Mondial de cross au Brésil après bientôt une décennie d’absence, et les organisateurs durent déployer beaucoup d’énergie et de moyens pour faire de ce GP une réussite malgré les conditions météo. Le nouveau complexe de Canelinha, situé au sud du Brésil a été le cadre de superbes courses et l’ultime manche MX2 fut la plus excitante du weekend.
En raison des pluies violentes qui s’étaient abattues tout au long de la semaine sur la région le programme du weekend dut être modifié, le programme du samedi étant annulé et reporté au lendemain. Une brève séance chronométrée remplaça les courses qualificatives, et Steven Frossard fut le plus rapide en action et signa la pôle position. La piste était en parfaite condition pour les courses, mais pendant la première manche les pilotes durent composer avec les projections de boue qui diminuèrent au fur et à mesure que la pite séchait.
Parti dans le top dix en première manche, Steven remonta assez rapidement en quatrième position ; les trois premiers ayant creusé un écart conséquent, il en restera là jusqu’à l’arrivée. S’élançant dans le top trois de la seconde manche, il livra alors un superbe duel à Marvin Musquin, couronné champion du Monde quelques heures plus tôt et au jeune espoir Ken Roczen ; tous trois ne baissèrent jamais le ton, terminant la manche séparés par moins de deux secondes ! Troisième de la course et du Grand Prix, Steven décrochait au Brésil son quatrième podium de l’année aux côtés de Musquin et Roczen ; il prend la sixième place finale du championnat.
Steven Frossard : « La journée avait bien commencé avec la pôle ce matin aux essais, j’ai été un peu surpris car la séance fut courte mais j’avais de bonnes sensations. Le terrain était magnifique, jamais je n’aurais pensé que ca serait aussi bien après toutes les pluies qui sont tombées. En première manche je suis moyennement parti, et très vite je me suis retrouvé sans écrans jetables ; j’étais gêné pour doubler, et quand je suis arrivé quatrième le trio de tête était loin. En seconde manche je suis mieux parti, et rapidement je suis revenu derrière Marvin ; j’aurais peut être pu l’attaquer mais j’ai voulu gérer ma course, ce qui a favorisé le retour de Roczen. J’ai perdu un peu de terrain quand il m’a doublé, mais je finis le GP dans ses roues et je suis heureux de ce dernier podium de l’année. »
Jean Jacques Luisetti : « Steven nous a fait plaisir en décrochant au Brésil son quatrième podium de l’année, cela fait du bien car le dernier datait du mois de juin et nous trouvions le temps long. Il a su gérer parfaitement son week-end, et le fait de finir l’année sur le podium en se bagarrant en course avec le champion du Monde va nous permettre d’aborder l’hiver dans la sérénité. »
Fourth podium of the season for Steven Frossard
After three long months, Steven Frossard went back on a Grand Prix podium this weekend in Brazil, during the fifteenth and last round of the 2009 Motocross World Championship.
Rain instigated the comeback of the Motocross World Championship in Brazil after nearly a decade and the organizers had to utilize all their energy and knowledge to make this event a success against the weather. The brand new facility of Canelinha, located in the southern part of the country, offered great racing and the last round of the MX2 series was the most tremendous of the weekend with strong battles for the podium.
Due to heavy rain the traditional program had been changed, with all the racing, including qualifications, re-scheduled for Sunday; the qualification heat replaced with a short timed practice period that was successful for Steven Frossard who posted the fastest lap in the morning. The track was in perfect condition for the races, but during the opening moto riders had to contend with the muddiest sprint of the day on a rapidly drying terrain. Steven Frossard was in the top ten of the first start and after a couple of fast laps he reached a fourth ranking in this moto.
Steven started the following heat in the top three, and entered a thrilling thirty five minute battle for the win with new World Champion Marvin Musquin and fast prospect Ken Roczen; all three never gave up and finished the race within two seconds of each other with Steven in third position. The result was enough to collect his fourth podium of the season, alongside Musquin and Roczen; Steven ended the 2009 series in sixth place.
Steven Frossard: “I was surprised to get the pole position this morning during the short practice session, but I had a good feeling here. The track was amazing; I didn’t believe it as we had so much rain during the week. My first start was average and after a few laps I had no more tear-offs for my goggles; it was difficult to pass and when I came to fourth position the leaders were far away. I got a better start in the following race and I came back right behind Musquin; I didn’t pass him but applied pressure and later Roczen joined us and overtook me. I tried everything possible to pass him back during the last laps but he kept the advantage. I finished the race right behind him and I’m happy to secure another podium for the last GP of the season.”
Jean Jacques Luisetti: “Steven gave the team a great moment with this podium in Brazil, his fourth one so far this season. The last one was in June, a long time ago! He had a perfect weekend, and mentally it’s great to end the championship with a podium for him and for the team.”
