Steven Frossard remporte sa première manche de Grand Prix
Comme on s’y attendait depuis le milieu de la saison passée, Steven Frossard vient de remporter sa première manche de championnat du Monde ce week-end en Bulgarie. Un succès qui aurait pu être encore plus complet sans une satanée pierre !
Une semaine après le déluge Italien, le paddock a retrouvé avec plaisir des conditions ‘estivales’ puisqu’il faisait un temps magnifique en Bulgarie, cadre de la seconde épreuve du Mondial. Sur un circuit considéré comme l’un des plus beaux du championnat pilotes comme mécaniciens ont apprécié ces conditions, et on a pu assister à de superbes courses.
Samedi lors de la qualification MX2 Steven accrochait sans problème une seconde place ; parti cinquième il accédait rapidement à la seconde position derrière Musquin tandis que Loic Rombaut mal parti se classait vingt neuvième. Bien placé sur la grille Steven allait s’élancer dans le top cinq de la première manche, et avant même la fin du premier tour s’installait en seconde position derrière Musquin ; l’écart allait rester stable entre les deux hommes jusqu’à ce que Steven soit obligé de lâcher prise dans le sixième tour, carter de boite de vitesse explosé par une pierre ! Terriblement frustré il s’alignait au second départ avec une sérieuse envie de revanche, et après avoir patienté deux tours derrière Simpson il s’emparait du commandement dès le troisième tour. Intouchable, il allait effectuer un cavalier seul jusqu’au drapeau à damiers, confirmant qu’il était bien l’un des hommes à suivre du championnat. Le week-end de Loic fut moins enthousiasmant ; mal parti dans les deux manches, il échouait à la vingt et unième place en première manche – seuls les vingt premiers marquent des points – avant d’abandonner dans la seconde suite à une chute.
Très véloce aux essais ou il figurait toujours parmi les huit premiers, Gregory Aranda était parti pour faire fort en qualification puisqu’il se battait avec De Dycker et Coppins avant de faire une erreur et de perdre beaucoup de temps. Seulement dix huitième de la manche qualificative il héritait d’une mauvaise position sur la grille mais se faufilait bien puisqu’il pointait en début de manche à la dixième place ; accédant à la neuvième place en première manche, Greg allait malheureusement connaitre un ‘coup de chaud’ et devait lever le pied, rétrogradant au seizième rang. La seconde manche allait être plus brève, Greg rentrant au parc après quelques tours alors qu’il était quinzième. Le championnat se poursuit le week-end prochain à Istambul (Turquie), cadre du 3ème GP de la saison.
Steven Frossard : « En première manche j’étais rapidement remonté second après être parti troisième, j’avais pris un peu d’avance sur Paulin quand la boite a cassé ; la roue arrière s’est bloquée dans la ligne des stands, je n’ai pas pu éviter la chute. En seconde manche je pars bien et je prends un bon rythme, et bien que je n’aie pas de trop bonnes sensations j’ai réussi à maintenir Paulin à distance pour gagner la manche. Cela n’enlève rien à ma déception car c’est le grand Prix que j’aurais du gagner aujourd’hui, la seule compensation est qu’on a vu aujourd’hui quand dans des conditions de course normales je suis dans le peloton de tête. Maintenant l’objectif est de réussir le doublé dans un prochain GP, pour me venger de cette malchance. »
Greg Aranda : « Samedi j’ai fait deux bonnes séances chronométrées, huitième puis sixième, et en course je pars dans le bon paquet puisque je me retrouve huitième, je reviens cinquième avant de chuter légèrement. J’ai mis un peu de temps à repartir et je me retrouve dix huitième, en bagarre avec Seb Pourcel. Dimanche matin je fais encore un bon temps au warm-up, en première manche je pars quinze pour rapidement revenir neuvième avant d’être victime d’un coup de pompe et de rétrograder à la seizième place. Ce fut pire encore en seconde manche, je ne tenais plus la moto alors que j’étais quinzième, j’avais envie de vomir et je suis rentré. Je ne sais pas si cela est du à la chaleur, au long voyage en camping car, j’espère juste que cela ira mieux en Turquie la semaine prochaine. »
Loic Rombaut : « Ce n’est pas un bon week-end pour moi, je ne me suis pas bien qualifié samedi et aujourd’hui j’ai pris deux mauvais départs. Je n’ai pas réussi à prendre un bon rythme en course, et après avoir échoué tout près des points en première manche je suis tombé en seconde manche et j’ai du abandonner. »
Philippe Vandevoorde: « C’est un week-end paradoxal, on devrait être heureux mais on repart triste et déçu car Steven aurait du signer son premier succès en GP si une pierre n’avait pas endommagé son carter de boite. Il a fait une superbe seconde manche, mais on attendait plus encore ! Greg a super bien roulé samedi, on voit qu’il a la vitesse mais dimanche il s’est mis dans le rouge en voulant suivre les meilleurs avec qui il était en bagarre. C’est la cause de son abandon en seconde manche, il aurait été stupide d’insister et de se blesser. La déception vient de Loic qui a les possibilités de faire beaucoup mieux, c’est lui qui tient les éléments en mains pour réagir et faire de meilleurs résultats »
First ever heat win for Steven Frossard in Bulgaria
The 2009 Grand Prix of Bulgaria was another ‘special day’ for team CLS, as Steven Frossard collected in Sevlievo his first ever moto win and came back inside the top seven of the Championship standings.
After the muddy Italian Grand Prix the Motocross community was pleased to enter Sevlievo, one of the best Motocross tracks in Europe. With huge facilities for teams, riders and media, and a perfect circuit for the riders, the event has been once more successful, with nice temperatures and welcome sunshine during the entire weekend.
Steven Frossard and his team mates were expecting better racing conditions in Bulgaria, and luckily they had the opportunity to race on a dry layout. On Saturday Steven secured a good position on the grid with a strong second place, while Loic scored a twenty ninth position. Steven got a good start in the first heat, coming quickly second; he put some pressure on the race leader, but during the sixth circulation he crashed in front of the pit-lane. He wasn’t able to continue the race, as a stone had made a hole in his gearbox before the crash and causes the incident. Steven got another top five start in the second heat and during the third circulation he grabbed the lead. He maintained a good rhythm and pulled away to secure his first ever GP moto win; seventh in the Grand Prix, he is now seventh in the rankings. His teammate Loic Rombaut didn’t score any points this weekend, after two bad starts and a crash in the second heat.
Gregory Aranda was in the top eight of both sessions on Saturday, and confirmed his speed in the qualifying race as he was battling in fifth place when he made a mistake and crashed. Qualified in seventeenth he got a good start at the first race and came in the top ten, but later felt tired and lost ranks to score a sixteenth place. He then retired in the following heat, feeling too tired to continue his race.
Steven Frossard: “In the first race I arrived pretty fast to second position and I had a gap over Paulin in third place when my gearbox broke; the rear wheel was locked in front of the pit lane, and I crashed. I had a good start in the second heat and I got a good rhythm but I never felt completely comfortable probably due to the fact that I retired early in the first race. I was able to contain Paulin and win my first heat, but I’m disappointed as without the DNF I would have won my first GP here. We saw today that in normal racing conditions I’m one of the fastest MX2 riders, now my goal is to soon have a double win.”
Gregory Aranda : “On Saturday I posted good lap times twice in the sessions, with an eighth and sixth position. I had a good start in the qualifying race, I was eighth and then fifth when I crashed; then I was eighteenth, battling with Seb Pourcel. On Sunday I got another eighth position during the warm-up, and I started the first moto in the top fifteen; I came to ninth but then I had no more energy and lost places to finish sixteenth. It was even worst during the next race, I wasn’t able to control the bike and retired; I don’t know if I’m sick or tired, we drove from Italy to Bulgaria by camper and I just hope that I will feel better next week in Turkey.”
Loic Rombaut: “It’s a bad weekend for me, I didn’t qualify well on Saturday and today I got two bad starts. I didn’t find a good rhythm during the races, and after missing the points in the opening moto I crashed pretty hard during the second one and retired.”
Philippe Vandevoorde: “It’s a strange weekend, normally we would have been happy with our first heat win, but in fact we are disappointed as Steven missed the GP victory due to a stone that broke the gearbox during the first heat. He had a great second race but we were expecting even more! Greg was strong and fast on Saturday, he had the speed to be in the top ten but on Sunday he wanted to battle with the fastest MX1 riders and lost too much energy. We’re disappointed with Loic’s results but we know that he has the potential to do better and it’s up to him to react.”
