Steven à deux reprises dans le top six
Steven Frossard a consolidé sa sixième place dans le Mondial MX2 au terme du Grand prix de Catalogne, sixième manche du championnat, pendant que Gregory Aranda signait un autre top ten en MX1.
L’édition 2008 de ce GP était encore dans toutes les mémoires, compte tenu des conditions météo dantesques qui avaient perturbé l’épreuve. Cette fois le soleil était de la partie, et c’est sous un beau soleil que s’est déroulée l’épreuve. Les conditions de pistes n’ont malheureusement pas été idéales, l’arrosage étant mal fait et conduisant à offrir aux pilotes une partie tantôt humide tantôt sèche avec un choix de trajectoire très réduit.
L’une des victimes de cette mauvaise préparation fut malheureusement Steven Frossard, qui perdit toute chance de bien se qualifier quand Paulin glissa devant lui dans une portion très humide ; trop proche pour pouvoir l’éviter, Steven chutait également et ne pouvait ensuite revenir qu’en quinzième position.
Dimanche l’aire de départ était un mélange de portions sèches et moins sèches, et de sa quinzième grille Steven prit un départ dans le paquet avant de faire un superbe premier tour pour pointer septième, puis sixième. Suivant Davide Guarneri dès le troisième tour il n’allait jamais trouver l’endroit ou le passer, finissant la course cinquième derrière l’Italien. Mieux parti en seconde manche il va cette fois se positionner en huitième position derrière Van Horebeek ; le suivant durant la majorité de la manche sans pouvoir le doubler il parviendra néanmoins à revenir sixième. Vingt cinquième de la première manche, Loic Rombaut parviendra dans la seconde course à revenir de la vingt cinquième à la dix neuvième place, marquant deux points au championnat.
Huitième de la manche qualificative MX1 Gregory sera malheureusement le premier à abandonner en course, se retrouvant bloqué dans les motos de Leok et de Dycker qui chutèrent juste devant lui. Moto endommagée Greg en restait là, avant de prendre sa revanche dans la course suivante ; parti dans le top ten il s’y tiendra toute la manche, marquant onze précieux points en se classant dixième.
Steven Frossard ‘Après mes chronos d’hier ou j’étais rapide j’attendais mieux en matière de résultat, mais ma quinzième place sur la grille ne m’a pas permis de prendre de bons départs. Malheureusement Paulin est tombé devant moi pendant la manche qualificative et je n’ai pu l’éviter, ce qui explique cette quinzième place. La préparation du terrain était telle qu’il n’y avait que deux mètres exploitables, il était très difficile de doubler car il ne fallait pas sortir de la bonne trace et c’est un peu limite pour un terrain de GP. Une cinquième et une sixième place me permettent de prendre de bons points dans les deux manches, dommage que j’ai pris un faux rythme quand je me suis retrouvé derrière Guarneri en première manche et Van Horebeek en seconde.’
Gregory Aranda ‘ J’étais frustré après la première manche, j’avais pris un bon départ mais je suis arrivé sur un accrochage entre Leok et De Dycker sans rencontrer de drapeaux jaunes et je n’ai pu les éviter. Par contre je suis content de ma seconde manche, j’ai eu un petit coup de barre pendant trois tours mais je me suis bien repris pour finir la course dixième. Chaque week-end je vois que je tiens de mieux en mieux physiquement, il me manque encore une petite dizaine de minutes mais je commence à me classer régulièrement dans le top dix et c’est encourageant’
Jean Jacques Luisetti ‘ Steven n’a pas très bien roulé sur ce circuit mono trajectoire, il n’est pas très bien parti de sa quinzième place sur la grille mais ensuite il n’a pas roulé avec son jus habituel. Sa quinzième place sur la grille ne reflète pas sa valeur puisqu’il a chuté à cause d’un autre pilote, mais sur un circuit mono trajectoire comme celui-ci il est important d’être très vite devant. Ses deux résultats dans le top six lui permettent de rester dans la course au podium, qui est notre objectif cette saison avant de viser le titre mondial en 2010 toujours avec Steven. Gregory n’a rien pu faire en première manche pour éviter Leok et De Dycker au sol, sa seconde manche a été bonne puisqu’une fois encore il signe le troisième meilleur temps en course. Il manque encore un peu de physique mais progresse chaque semaine, n’oublions pas qu’il n’a que 19 ans ! Quand à Loic nous avons revu avec lui son approche de la course, il marque des points et c’est encourageant’
Steven twice in the top six
Steven Frossard consolidates his sixth place in the MX2 World Championship after the Catalan Grand Prix, round six of the FIM series, while teammate Gregory Aranda scored another top ten result in the MX1 class.
The 2008 edition of Spanish GP was still fresh in the mind and remarkable for being as wet as this season’s opening round in Italy. Luckily the weather was perfect in Catalunya this weekend, and under high temperatures the event took place on a familiar track for the competitors. Both the preparation and the watering of the track play a major role in all the races, as the surface was either too dry or too slippery depending on the sections.
Unfortunately one of the main victim of this preparation was Steven Frossard, who lost his chance to get a good result when Paulin slid on a wet corner; too close behind his countryman, Steven crashed also, and then came back fifteenth.
The starting area was another mix of dry and wet sections on Sunday and from his fifteenth gate pick Frossard had a mid pack start and produced a perfect lap to arrive to seventh and then sixth; following Davide Guarneri since the third circulation although failing to find a spot to pass him and ending the race in fifth place just behind the Italian. He had a better jump from the gate in Moto2, and reached eighth behind Van Horebeek; following his rival for most of the distance Steven again struggled to overtake and finally place sixth. Twenty fifth in the opening race, Loic Rombaut scored two points during the second heat after coming back from twenty fifth at mid race distance.
Eighth in the MX1 qualifying race Gregory will be the first to retire during the opening moto, as he collided with the bikes of Leok and De Dycker in the waves section and retired with a damaged motorcycle. His second race was much better, as Greg always compete in the top ten to score eleven points with his tenth place.
Steven Frossard: ‘I had good lap times on Saturday during the practice sessions and I was expecting a great result here but my fifteenth position on the grid didn’t help me with the starts. Unfortunately during the qualifying race Paulin crashed and I couldn’t avoid him. The track preparation was not good; there were just two meters of dry line where you had to stay, so it was difficult to pass. I finished fifth and sixth and scored good points in both races, it could have been better but I stayed too long behind Guarneri in the first race and Van Horebeek in the second. I lost my rhythm a little bit behind them and couldn’t pass them.’
Gregory Aranda: ‘ I came back to the pit’s frustrated from the opening race, I had a good start but when I arrived in the waves section Leok and De Dycker were on the ground and it was impossible for me to avoid them, there was no yellow flag! My second heat was much better, I had to slow down for three laps but then I found the energy to finish tenth. Each weekend I feel physically stronger, I’ve to continue working and I’m pleased to see that I’m regularly in the top ten now.’
Jean Jacques Luisetti: ‘Steven didn’t perform so well on this track and for sure he couldn’t get a good start with fifteenth place in the gate. We can’t say anything about his qualifying result, as another rider crashed just in front of him and took him to the ground. But the track only had one line and it was necessary to have a good start here, anyway he twice scored a top six result and that’s important for the standings. He is not so far from the top three and that’s our goal this season, we’ll race with him for the title in 2010. Concerning Loic we worked with him about his race approach; he scored some points here and let’s hope that it will continue.’
