Ouverture de mondial boueuse en Italie
La pluie et la boue resteront dans la mémoire de tous ceux qui ont assisté à l’épreuve d’ouverture du Championnat du Monde de Motocross 2009! Ce fut un week-end difficile pour les pilotes comme pour les motos, et malgré quelques soucis Steven Frossard et Loic Rombaut ont accroché leurs premiers points de l’année.
Faenza, cadre du dernier GP 2008 était également le théâtre du premier GP 2009, mais cette fois le soleil avait laissé place à la pluie. Les conditions de course furent grandement perturbées par la boue, à un point tel que le programme fut interrompu à mi-journée et qu’une seule manche fut disputée dans chaque catégorie.
Après s’être brillamment qualifié en seconde position samedi, Steven Frossard n’a pas vraiment profité de cet avantage dimanche puisqu’avant même la fin du premier tour il devait s’arrêter aux stands pour prendre une nouvelle paire de lunettes. Reprenant la piste en vingt septième position le leader du team CLS fera un convaincant retour aux avant postes, se retrouvant cinquième après trente minutes de course. Malheureusement il se retrouvera bloqué dans un bouchon, perdant du temps avant que son moteur ne cale un tour plus tard alors qu’il était onzième. Sans même parcourir les cinq derniers tours, Steven était classé treizième ! Son équipier Loic Rombaut ne fut pas plus heureux, puisqu’il se retrouva sans embrayage et fut contraint à l’abandon alors qu’il était dixième, après avoir mené une course plus convaincante que sa manche qualificative.
Comme tous les pilotes MX1 Gregory Aranda prendra part samedi à la course qualificative MX1, qui remplace la séance chronométrée. Victime d’une chute au départ Greg se classera dix neuvième, et ne fera pas mieux dimanche sur une piste très dégradée. Obligé de s’arrêter aux pits pendant la course pour prendre de nouveaux gants, Greg renoncera un peu plus tard avec un souci d’embrayage.
Steven Frossard: “Samedi j’ai fait une bonne qualification, je suis passé en l’espace de dix minutes de la quinzième à la troisième place et après avoir longtemps suivi Simpson je l’ai doublé dans le dernier tour. J’avais une bonne position sur la grille, mais aujourd’hui les conditions étaient bien différentes et j’étais dans le top dix en haut de la première montée quand un autre pilote m’a percuté par l’arrière. Nous sommes tombés, j’ai du passer par les stands pour prendre une paire de lunettes et je suis ensuite revenu de la vingt septième à la cinquième place. Mais à six tours de l’arrivée je me suis retrouvé bloqué dans une côte, j’ai perdu du temps et un tour plus tard mon moteur s’est arrêté. »
Loic Rombaut: “J’ai fait une bonne sortie de grille en qualification, mais nous avions fait un mauvais choix de couronne et je me suis fait déboiter dès qu’on est arrive en terrain meuble. La piste était très rapide, il n’y avait pas beaucoup d’endroits pour doubler et je me suis classé vingt neuvième. Aujourd’hui c’était différent, il a beaucoup plus mais cela ne me dérange pas car j’aime rouler dans la boue. Le premier tour a été un peu chaud et j’ai du passer prendre de nouvelles lunettes aux pits, puis j’ai fait ma course et j’étais dixième quand l’embrayage a fait des siennes. Dommage, je prends deux points au lieu d’un top dix, mais c’est la course. »
Gregory Aranda: “J’ai fait de bons chromos dans les séances d’essai, mais j’ai chuté au départ de la course qualificative et j’ai perdu tout chance de bien me classer. Aujourd’hui ce fut encore pire, je suis mal parti, je me suis arrêté prendre de nouveaux gants et j’étais revenu quinzième quand la moto s’est arrêtée avec un problème d’embrayage. C’est un GP frustrant, samedi la piste était super mais aujourd’hui c’était plutôt galère. »
Jean Jacques Luisetti: “Ce fut un week-end difficile pour tous les teams, le temps était mauvais mais les organisateurs n’ont pas été à la hauteur. On est en championnat du Monde mais c’est pire qu’un championnat de ligue, je ne veux même pas entrer dans les détails ! Steven avait un bon rythme quand il s’est retrouvé bloqué par d’autres pilotes, malheureusement sa course s’est arrêtée quand son moteur a calé. Bien que ne bouclant pas les cinq derniers tours il est classé treizième, cela en dit long sur les conditions de course ! Les motos ont souffert aujourd’hui, et Loic comme Gregory ont du se retirer sur un problème d’embrayage. »
Muddy opening round in Italy
Rain and mud will stay in the memory of all the people involved in the opening round of the 2009 Motocross World Championship. It was a tough weekend for the riders as well as the bikes, and despite some troubles Steven Frossard scored his first points of the season.
The 2009 Grand Prix season kicked off this weekend in Faenza, home of the final round of the ’08 series. The track was unchanged since last September but unfortunately the weather conditions were worse than six months ago as heavy rain arrived on Saturday evening and transformed the hardpack circuit into a muddy mess.
After qualifying in second position on Saturday Steven Frossard couldn’t take any advantage of his inside position on the gate and had to make a pit stop to collect new goggles before the end of the opening lap. Rejoining the field in twenty-seventh the CLS rider made a strong race by coming back to fifth after a majority of the moto; unfortunately Steven then became stuck on a hill, lost time and finally stalled his engine one lap later while he was eleventh. Without running the last five laps, he is classified in thirteenth position! His teammate Loic Rombaut wasn’t successful too, as he damaged his clutch and was forced to retire; the young Frenchman was in tenth position, performing a consistent race after a difficult qualification on Saturday.
On Saturday the MX1 riders discovered the new qualifying rules, as the traditional timed practice session has been replaced by a qualifying race for the forty riders involved in the event. This first ever MX1 qualifying race started with a crash for Gregory Aranda, who came back twenty minutes later in nineteenth position. Sunday was not much better for Greg, who stopped early in the box to get new gloves and later had to retire with a damaged clutch.
Steven Frossard: “On Saturday I had a good qualifying race. I came back from fifteenth to third within ten minutes and during the last lap I passed Simpson to finish second. I had a good position on the grid but today the race conditions were totally different. My start was not so good but I was in the top ten at the top of the hill when another rider pushed me; we crashed together and I had to do a pit stop to get a new pair of goggles. I recovered from twenty-seventh to fifth, but six laps prior to the end I was stopped in an uphill. I lost time but was still eleventh; unfortunately the engine stalled one lap later and I couldn’t continue.”
Loic Rombaut: “My jump off the gate was good in the qualifying race on Saturday, but we made a wrong choice of sprocket and I took a bad start. The track was too fast, there were not many places to pass and I finished twenty-ninth. Today was different, it rained a lot during the night but that didn’t bother me as I like riding in the mud. The first lap was pretty tough and I came in the pit to get new goggles, then I made my own race and was tenth when I had trouble with the clutch. Instead of scoring a top ten result I just took two points, that’s racing and I hope to get more in Bulgaria.”
Gregory Aranda: “I had good lap times during the practice sessions but I crashed at the start of the qualifying race and lost any opportunity of a good gate; I finished nineteenth, and my race today was even worse. I got a bad start, stopped in the pits to get new gloves and I was back to fifteenth when the bike stopped with a clutch problem. It’s a frustrating GP, on Saturday the track was nice but today we didn’t have the best conditions to open the GP season.”
Jean Jacques Luisetti: “It was a difficult weekend for all the teams, the weather was bad but the organization was not what we can expect for a World Championship event. Steven had a good rhythm when he was stopped in a pack of fallen riders, unfortunately the engine stalled and his race was finished. He didn’t do the final five laps but scored eight points, that gives an idea about the racing conditions in Faenza! The bikes suffered in these muddy conditions and both Loic Rombaut and Gregory Aranda retired due to damaged clutches.”
