Premier podium de la saison pour Steven Frossard
Vainqueur samedi de sa première course qualificative de l’année, Steven Frossard a décroché son premier podium de GP de la saison à Agueda, cinquième épreuve du Mondial 2009. Troisième et second des manches, Steven monte sur la seconde marche du podium alors que Gregory Aranda obtient son meilleur résultat de la saison avec une neuvième place en MX1.
Arrivé au Portugal peu de temps après son succès en Championnat de France à Plomion, Steven allait signer le meilleur temps des deux séances d’essais du samedi, avant de dominer la course qualificative ; c’est la première fois qu’il s’impose dans cet exercice, alors que dans le même temps Gregory signait sa meilleure qualification de l’année avec une septième place.
Cinquième en début de première manche Steven allait rapidement revenir en troisième position derrière la star locale Rui Gonçalves et Gautier Paulin ; les deux pilotes Kawasaki bientôt rejoints par Marvin Musquin allaient se disputer la seconde place, mais Steven aux prises avec un petit problème de lunette assura la troisième place après avoir reçu de la terre dans les yeux. Virant troisième derrière Goncalves et Davide Guarneri en seconde manche, Steven fera une course régulière ; perdant beaucoup de temps derrière Guarneri, il prendra l’avantage après vingt minutes de course mais ne pourra revenir sur Gonçalves. Dauphin du Portugais dans la manche et sur l’ensemble du GP, il marque des points pour la première fois de l’année ! Loic Rombaut n’a pas connu la même réussite que ses équipiers ; impliqué dans chaque manche dans une chute collective, il devra abandonner en première manche avec un radiateur percé et reviendra en seconde manche jusqu’à la vingt quatrième place.
Bien place sur la grille Gregory fera un bon départ en première manche, se retrouvant septième puis sixième derrière quatre vainqueurs de GP MX1; septième à mi course il ne pourra résister au retour de Coppins et Barragan, prenant la neuvième place de la manche. Sixième en début de seconde manche, Greg livrera comme à Plomion une belle bagarre à David Vuillemin qui prendra finalement l’avantage. Baissant un peu de rythme en fin de course, Greg se classera une nouvelle fois neuvième de la manche pour prendre cette même position sur l’ensemble du GP.
Steven Frossard : ‘Après la journée d’hier j’espérais la victoire aujourd’hui, mais en fait j’ai moyennement réussi mes départs et ensuite j’ai pris un faux rythme en début de course. Je n’ai jamais pu revenir sur le leader, en première manche j’ai été gêné car de la terre est rentrée dans mes lunettes, et en seconde je pensais pouvoir revenir sur Goncalves mais ce ne fut pas le cas. Je suis resté très longtemps derrière Guarneri, il a essayé à plusieurs reprises de me couper en deux et quand je l’ai enfin doublé Goncalves avait sept secondes d’avance. Je reste content d’avoir enfin terminé deux manches dans les bons points, je monte sur mon premier podium de l’année et c’est cool’
Loic Rombaut : ‘Hier en manche qualificative comme aujourd’hui en course j’ai été pris dans des chutes collectives au départ, difficile dans ces conditions de pouvoir faire un résultat. En première manche j’ai été pris dans une seconde chute, dans laquelle le radiateur a été percé. Au second départ je tape dans la grille, je pars après tout le monde et je me retrouve quand même avec trois motos sur la mienne au cours du premier tour !’
Gregory Aranda : ‘Ca a bien commencé samedi, j’ai fait de bons chronos dans toutes les séances avant de finir septième en manche qualificative. En première manche je suis bien parti, j’ai fait une bonne manche mais en fin de course Barragan et Coppins m’ont doublé. Je suis encore mieux parti en seconde, j’ai pris la cinquième place avant que Cairoli et Leok me doublent ; en fin de manche j’ai un peu baissé de rythme ce qui a profité à Vuillemin et Swanepoel, mais je réussis deux top dix ce week-end et c’est bien pour le team comme pour moi. Jusqu’à maintenant j’axais mon entraînement sur la vitesse de pointe, là je vais travailler l’endurance pour être plus costaud en fin de course ; ce qui me rassure c’est que j’ai tenu plus longtemps qu’en Bulgarie, ce qui prouve que je suis sur la bonne voie’
Jean Jacques Luisetti : ‘ Nous tenons enfin notre premier podium, on espérait peut être encore un peu mieux après la journée de samedi mais c’est une première étape et Steven a confirmé tout son potentiel. Nous sommes également très contents des résultats de Gregory, il termine deux fois neuvième en tenant plus longtemps que d’habitude une bonne cadence ; en seconde manche il signe le troisième temps en course, cela en dit long sur sa vitesse et sa progression. Difficile de porter un jugement sur les courses de Loic, il est pris dans des chutes durant les deux manches et ne peut confirmer ses bons résultats du week-end dernier. First podium of the season for Steven Frossard
Winner of the qualifying race on Saturday for pole position, Steven Frossard collected his first GP podium of the season for Team CLS in Agueda, the fifth round of the 2009 World Championship. Third and second in the motos Steven finished as runner-up behind Portuguese Rui Gonçalves, while Gregory Aranda got his best result of the season with a ninth place in the MX1 Grand Prix.
Coming to Portugal after his first win of the season during the French Elite Championship in Plomion last week, Steven Frossard posted the fastest lap times on Saturday during both practice sessions and then dominated the qualifying race; it was the first ever qualifying win for Steven, while Gregory Aranda posted his best qualifying result with a seventh place.
Fifth in the first part of the opening race Steven moved to third behind local star Gonçalves and Paulin after ten minutes of action; then the two Kawasaki riders and Musquin battled for the second position, but Steven had trouble with his goggles and secured a third position with dust in his eyes. Coming to third behind Gonçalves and Davide Guarneri at the start of the second moto, Steven Frossard made a strong race and passed the Italian rider after twenty minutes to secure second position. Runner-up he also gathered second place in the Grand Prix, scoring points in both races for the first time this season. Loic Rombaut had a difficult weekend; he retired during the first moto with a broken radiator, and later came back to twenty fourth in the second heat.
Greg had a good position on the gate and moved to seventh and later sixth position in the first race, behind four former GP winners; seventh at mid-race distance Greg could not resist the attentions of Coppins and Barragan during the last circulations and claimed ninth spot. Sixth after the opening lap of the following heat Greg battled during most of the race with David who finally took advantage over Greg, who finished the heat and ninth and claimed the same position in the GP.
Steven Frossard: ‘I got great results on Saturday and for sure I was expecting a win today, but I made an average start and then struggled to get a rhythm in the first part of both races. I was not able to catch the leader; during the first race I had some troubles with my goggles and got dust in my eyes when I was behind Paulin, and then during the next one I was too long behind Guarneri who was riding aggressively. When I passed him Goncalves had a seven second lead, it was too late and too far but I’m happy to finish in good positions twice and collect my first podium of the season.’
Loic Rombaut : ‘Yesterday during the qualifying race, as well as today in both heats, I’ve been involved in a first lap pile-up, and then it was impossible to get any decent results. I damaged my radiator in another crash during the first heat, and in the second I found myself trapped under three other bikes only a few corners after the start!”
Gregory Aranda: ‘The weekend started with great results on Saturday in all the practice sessions, and then I finished seventh in the qualifying race. I got a good start in the first moto, but during the last ten minutes Barragan and Coppins both passed me. My second start was even better, I came up to fifth before Leok and Cairoli overtook me; I couldn’t keep the rhythm during the entire race, and I lost two other positions at the end when Vuillemin and Swanepoel came through. However I finished twice in the top ten for the first time, and that’s a good result for the team. I have to change my training program, I was focused on my speed but now I have to work in order to keep the rhythm until the end.’
Jean Jacques Luisetti: ‘We had to wait five GPs to get our first podium, but we got it! We were expecting a GP win as Steven was so strong on Saturday, but this is a first step and Steven confirmed his potential. Concerning Loic, it’s more difficult to make a judgement; he was involved in collective crashes during the three races and couldn’t go for any result.’
