Steven a mi-régime
Comme en Bulgarie la semaine passée, Steven Frossard n’a pu terminer qu’une des deux manches du GP de Turquie, nouvelle étape du championnat du Monde de motocross. En lice pour le podium Steven doit se contenter d’une troisième place en seconde manche, alors que Gregory Aranda obtient son meilleur résultat de la saison avec une onzième place en seconde manche lui aussi.
Belle épreuve que ce Grand Prix de Turquie, nouveau venu qui permet au Mondial de s’internationaliser un peu plus et qui marquait la fin de la première étape du championnat avec trois épreuves successives qui auront mis les organismes à rude épreuve. Créé spécialement pour l’occasion le circuit d’Hezarfen dans la banlieue d’Istanbul a offert de belles courses, devant un public fort nombreux.
En signant le holeshot de la course qualificative MX2, puis en restant durant vingt cinq minutes aux avant postes pour se classer cinquième, Loic Rombaut entamait bien son week-end Turc et confirmait qu’avec un bon départ la vie n’était plus la même. Un bon départ, c’est ce qui manquait à Steven impliqué au second virage dans un accrochage collectif ; reparti trente et unième, il revenait au dix neuvième rang devant Musquin et Boog, eux aussi prisonniers de ce crash au départ. Cette mauvaise place sur la grille n’allait pas l’empêcher de s’élancer en cinquième position, et de bien vite se positionner dans le sillage de Paulin et Osborne, les leaders de cette manche ; un problème de frein arrière causera sa perte, entrainant une sortie de piste et un abandon. Huitième en début de course, Loic chutera malheureusement dès le cinquième tour et en restera là. Une nouvelle fois bien parti en seconde manche Steven viendra une fois encore se mêler à la lutte pour la première fois, cette fois aux côtés d’Osborne et Musquin ; dans la roue des leaders il lui manquera un tour pour pouvoir les attaquer, mais ce podium de manche confirme qu’il est bien l’un des plus véloces du plateau. Moins bien parti cette fois Loic va se faire piéger par le circuit, chutant et terminant à la lisière des points avec une vingt et unième place.
Qualifié en douzième position, douzième derrière Coppins au moment de son abandon en première manche et onzième en seconde manche, Gregory Aranda a affirmé ses prétentions en MX1, confirmant définitivement qu’il avait sa place dans le top dix mondial. Consistant tout au long du week-end sur ce circuit très exigeant, Greg repart de Turquie confiant pour la suite du championnat après s’être frotté tout au long du week-end aux gros bras du championnat.
Steven Frossard : ‘ En raison de la chute au départ de la qualification je me suis retrouvé mal placé sur la grille dimanche, mais je me suis bien faufilé au premier départ pour me positionner dans le groupe de tête. J’étais derrière Osborne quand je me suis retrouvé sans frein arrière, coupelles cassées. J’ai ralenti et essayé de continuer, mais à l’approche d’un virage je n’ai pas pu m’arrêter et je suis sorti de la piste. En seconde manche je suis très vite passé de la treizième à la troisième place, puis je suis revenu sur Osborne et Musquin mais il m’a manqué un tour pour les attaquer. Troisième ce n’est pas mal, j’ai encore prouvé que j’avais à la fois le physique et la vitesse et maintenant j’ai hâte de monter sur mon premier podium de l’année.’
Loic Rombaut : ‘Samedi j’ai réussi un super départ en qualification, et tout de suite ca change ta course ; tu es devant tout le monde, tu peux choisir tes trajectoires sans te faire gêner, c’est une autre course ! En première manche je suis bien parti, j’étais septième quand j’ai chuté dans une ornière. Mon second départ fut moins bon, j’étais dix neuvième quand on s’est accrochés avec Gonçalves. Ce week-end fut mitigé, je repars déçu de ne pas avoir marqué de points mais j’ai repris confiance en moi avec la qualification du samedi.’
Gregory Aranda: ‘Ce fut un bon week-end, même si j’ai eu un peu de mal avec la piste au premier essai, je n’ai pas l’habitude de ce genre de circuit. Cela a été de mieux en mieux au fil des séances et je me suis qualifié douzième en course. J’ai pris un bon départ en première manche, mais alors que je me battais avec Coppins j’ai tordu mon disque de frein avant et il était dès lors impossible de continuer. Treizième au second départ je me suis battu durant toute la manche avec Desalle et Pourcel, pour obtenir mon meilleur résultat de la saison avec une onzième place.’
Jean Jacques Luisetti : ‘Dommage qu’une fois encore Steven ne termine qu’une manche, on sait qu’il a le niveau pour monter sur le podium mais pour l’instant il se refuse à nous. Loic a eu la réaction que l’on attendait de lui, il ne marque pas de points puisqu’il chute dans les deux manches mais il nous a rassuré dans la manche qualificative comme dans ses débuts de manche. Gregory a fait un beau GP, il a du abandonner en première manche après avoir tordu son frein en se bagarrant avec Coppins, vainqueur en Bulgarie, avant de se battre pour un top dix en seconde manche. Tout le monde va maintenant monter en Belgique se préparer pour le GP des Pays Bas, un rendez vous à la fois important et délicat’
Another heat podium for Steven
As in Bulgaria last week, Steven Frossard could only finished one of the two races in Turkey, new venue for the Motocross World Championship. Battling twice for the podium Steven finally scored a podium result in the second heat, while Gregory Aranda scored his best result of the season with an eleventh place in the second heat.
This first ever Motocross GP of Turkey was a nice event; organized on a brand new circuit in Hezarfen, in Istanbul surroundings, he offered a good opportunity to expend the series through new countries. It was the last of three GP’s in a row, and all the team members were happy to drive back home on Sunday night!
When he posted the holeshot of the MX2 qualifying race and then battled in front to secure a fifth position, Loic Rombaut confirmed his potential and proved that with a good start life is different! A great start, which was the piece missing in Steven’s game on Saturday as he was involved in a collective pile-up in the second corner; coming back from thirty one to nineteenth, Steven did his best to get a decent gate on the grid. Fifth at the beginning of the opening race, he came back third right behind Paulin and Osborne but later had to retire as his rear brake was destroyed while Loic, eighth during the first laps, crashed and retired. With another good start in the second heat Steven came third, and battled once more with race leaders Musquin and Osborne; he was close to pass them, and confirmed that he is one of the fastest MX2 riders this season. Racing in the points during most of the race, Loic crashed again and finished twenty one, just at the points limit!
Qualified in twelfth position, again twelfth behind Coppins when he retired during the opening race and finally eleventh in the next moto, Gregory Aranda confirmed his potential among the best ten MX1 riders. Consistent during this Grand Prix on a demanding circuit, Greg came back home more confident than ever as he battled all weekend long with the fastest riders.
Steven Frossard: ‘ I was involved in the first corner pile-up during the qualifying race and then I got a bad position on the grid. The first start was not so bad; I found some good lines to come to third behind Osborne when I lost the rear brake and was unable to stop the bike in a corner. During the second heat I came quickly from thirteenth to third, then I came up behind Osborne and Musquin but I needed just one more lap to pass them both. Third is not so bad, I confirmed that I have the speed and the physical condition to make a podium but I’m still waiting for it!’
Loic Rombaut: ‘On Saturday I had a great start and that changed the race for me ; you are leading the pack and able to choose your line, it’s another world! On Sunday I was in seventh position when I crashed in a rut and later retired. My second moto start was worse, I was maybe twenty ninth when I collided with Gonçalves. It was a mixed weekend, I’m disappointed to score no points but I feel more confident after my good qualifying performance.’
Gregory Aranda: ‘It was a good weekend, even if I struggled with the track at the first practice session. It was an unusual circuit for me, but I improved my results at each session and qualified in twelfth position. I had a good start in the first race, but when I was fighting with Coppins I jumped on his bike and destroyed my front brake disk, it was impossible to continue. I was thirteenth at the start of the second moto and kept with the rhythm of Desalle and Pourcel to score an eleventh place, my best result so far this season.’
Jean Jacques Luisetti : ‘Once more Steven finished only one race, we know that he has the potential to grab a podium but so far we are out of luck. Loic reacted perfectly and offered us what we’re looking for, results. For sure he didn’t collect points on Sunday but he showed what he can do during the qualifying race. Now the team will move in Belgium, to prepare for the Benelux Grand Prix.’
