Une manche sept pour Steven dans l’enfer de Lommel
Cadre du GP de Belgique 2008 Lommel était considérée comme LA course la plus dure du championnat, de par la nature même de la piste tracée dans une carrière sablonneuse. Même les pilotes ‘locaux’ qu’ils soient Néerlandais, Belges ou étrangers basés dans la région y ont connu des avatars, et la septième place de Steve en première manche est d’autant plus méritoire.
Dès les premiers essais samedi les pilotes non aguerris au pilotage dans le sable ont souffert, et cela s’est confirmé tout au long du week-end. Huitième de sa course qualificative Steven négociait correctement sa journée du samedi pour son second GP dans le sable après Valkenswaard, tandis que Gregory ne passait pas ce premier cap. Pris dans une chute au départ de sa course qualificative, puis victime d’une nouvelle chute au repêchage alors qu’il tentait d’améliorer son chrono, il restera spectateur ce week-end.
Parti moyennement mais se faufilant très bien en première manche, Steven était pointé neuvième en début de manche avant de gagner deux places. Longtemps en bagarre avec Nicolas Aubin il finissait par céder, et filait vers la huitième place avant que son compatriote ne lui fasse un beau cadeau en chutant dans le dernier tour. Septième, Steven abordait confiant la seconde manche ou son départ était du même calibre. Rapidement septième, Steven perdait un peu de terrain quand il se tordait la cheville dans un trou après dix minutes de course ; perdant quelques places mais poursuivant son effort il recollait à un groupe de trois pilotes quand dans un virage l’appui se dérobait sous sa roue avant. Chutant, perdant gant et lunettes, Steven allait serrer les dents pour aller grappiller les six précieux points de la seizième place. Onzième du GP, il retrouvera le week-end prochain le circuit de Loket ou il fit ses débuts en mondial il y a tout juste deux ans.
Steven Frossard : ‘Je m’attendais à ce que Lommel soit une étape difficile, et ce le fut même si finalement je suis très content des résultats obtenus pour ma première expérience dans de telles conditions. Qualifié en huitième position je ne suis pas trop bien sorti de la grille dans les deux manches, mais heureusement je me suis bien faufilé dans les premiers virages. J’ai oscillé durant toute la première manche entre la neuvième et la septième place, dont j’hérite finalement après qu’Aubin ait chuté dans le dernier tour. La seconde manche fut plus compliquée puisque je me suis tordu la cheville dans un trou alors que j’étais septième ; j’ai perdu quatre places, puis dans un virage l’appui en sable s’est dérobé sous ma roue avant et j’ai chuté. J’ai perdu un gant et des lunettes, si bien que le dernier quart d’heure a été difficile. Je me classe seizième de la manche et je sauve six points, ce qui me permet de rester au contact des deux pilotes qui me précèdent au championnat’
Gregory Aranda : ‘Le week-end avait mal commencé avec de mauvais chronos aux premiers essais, en course qualificative je suis pas mal parti mais j’ai été pris dans une chute au troisième virage et le moteur a calé. J’ai eu beaucoup de mal à repartir, donc direction le last chance. J’ai longtemps été cinquième, et quand j’ai voulu améliorer je me suis pris une bonne chute et c’en était fini de mes chances. Dès mardi je remonte sur la 450, pour préparer la fin de mondial que je disputerais dans cette cylindrée’
Jean Jacques Luisetti : ‘Nous savions que ce serait difficile, ce le fut mais malgré tout Steven a superbement tiré son épingle du jeu avec une probante septième place en première manche. Un résultat qu’il aurait pou renouveler en seconde manche sans cette chute dans laquelle il perd à la fois un gant et ses lunettes, ce qui est toujours handicapant dans le sable. Il a été combatif tout au long du week-end, et nous savons tous ce qui reste à faire pour arriver encore plus forts l’an prochain sur ce type de circuit. Gregory n’est lui pas passé aux qualifications et c’est une déception, quelque part il avait déjà l’esprit en MX1 ou il fera ses débuts le week-end prochain avec j’en suis sûr beaucoup plus de réussite’

Steven seventh of one heat in Lommel
Lommel has always been considered as one of the hardest sand tracks in Europe, and for the young French members of team CLS it was a first GP experience there. Already on Saturday during the qualifying races things were pretty difficult, as Steven finished his race in eighth position – his worst qualification since Bulgaria – while Greg missed to qualified with a crash at the start of his race and then a ninth place in the LCQ.
The first start of Steven was not so good, but he did a strong opening lap to recover many places and came in ninth position. He earned two ranks and was battling for the seventh place with Nico Aubin, who finally passed him and later crashed in the last lap. Seven was a pretty good result for Steven, who only raced twice in Valkenswaard as sand experience in his career. His start was pretty similar in the second heat, and he was again seventh when he twisted his ankle in a hole. Pushing hard to stay in the top ten he then lost many places when he crashed in a corner. Losing one glove and his goggles in this crash, he ended in sixteenth position and scored six points in this race. Eleventh of the race, he will be back in Loket next week, a track where he made his GP debut two years ago.
Steven Frossard: ‘I knew that Lommel would be a difficult round for me, and after South Africa I came here to practice near our Belgian workshop. It was a difficult race but I’m pretty satisfied with my results for my first experience in such a deep sand, as you can’ compare it to Valkenswaard. My starts were not so good but twice I found good lines in the first corners to pass many riders. I did the first race between the ninth and seventh place to end seventh after Aubin’s crash. The second was more complicated, as I twisted my ankle and then crashed. I don’t understand why I lost a glove in this crash, but then it was difficult without glove and goggles. The most important was to finish the race and score some points, that’s what I did and for sure next races will be easier for me’
Gregory Aranda: ‘The week-end didn’t start well with bad lap times in the first two sessions, and then at the first start I crashed at the third corner with other riders and my engine staled. In the last chance session I was fifth during most of the session, and in a last attempt I crashed and that was finished. I will train this week with a 450, a class I will race the last GP’s to prepare the future’
Jean Jacques Luisetti: ‘We all knew that it would be a demanding race, and we were happy when Steven finished seventh in the first race. He could renew this result in the second heat without his crash, but that’s the race and unfortunately he lost his goggles and a glove in this crash. He was again fighting all weekend long, and we know what we have to do for the future to be stronger on this kind of tracks. Gregory missed his qualification and that’s disappointing, for sure his mind was already in the MX1 class’
